All experienced marketers know how valuable link building is for successful SEO. But you’ll want to be careful and avoid getting them from just any neighborhood. Extra money and time spent are the prices of errors in link building judgment.
If you’ve decided to build links to your sites, then it’s best to do it correctly. While the short cuts look appealing, it won’t be worth it if Google bans your site. In the past few years, the whole link building process has gone through a makeover.
Actually, building links is not any easier to do, it’s gotten a lot harder to do. It’s just that Google has gotten tougher on marketers who try to cheat their system.
But some black hat methods such as comment and link spamming are still used by many marketers. Simply speaking, effective and accepted backlinking requires time to execute, and that’s why it’s easy for a marketer to make a mistake with backlinking.
Make Sure You Get Relevant Backlinks
One of the biggest mistakes that webmasters make is getting backlinks coming from irrelevant websites that have absolutely no connection to the subject of your site. You need to focus on building backlinks from sites that contain the same or similar keywords or niche topics to your own. For example, if your site is all about weight loss, there’s no point in getting backlinks from gardening sites. It won’t add any value.
Find Quality Backlink Sites
Finding quality sites within your own niche or subject can be a little tricky, but it’s not impossible. It makes no difference how small you think your own niche is, there will always be plenty of sites containing relevant content to your own for link building purposes. Type in your own niche’s keywords into a search engine and you’ll be surprised how many other sites are out there with similar topics to your own.
Contact the webmasters of those sites and enquire about the possibility of getting a backlink from them.
Some people don’t like to approach webmasters directly like this, but it is a very reliable way to get the backlink you want. Be prepared to spend a little time establishing communication with other webmasters, but your efforts will show results. Have a little patience and keep contacting the owners of relevant sites, instead of trying to hurry things along with irrelevant sites.
Another mistake webmasters make but don’t realize is linking to good websites that turn out to be bad later on. There will be times when even after checking a site is good and putting up your link, it later on takes the ugly turn and goes indecent by publishing objectionable content. When you check for broken links, it’s good to check where the links are leading.
Backlinks are extremely important for the SEO health of your site, which is why you need to pay extra attention to the links you acquire. All diligent marketers keep a close eye on these issues to prevent serious problems.
The mistakes we’ve gone over can cost you a lot over time if you let them happen, or don’t do something about it if they are present. You can fix them very easily and avoid them, as well.

Paul
Paul,
It’s always good to have a mix of do follow and no follow to make it more natural.
Thanks for the great tips…
What do you consider to be a quality backlink? And should you do the backlinks direct to your site?
Somewhere that is considered an authority site in the search engine eyes. eg. youtube, adobe, wordpress and high page ranking sites etc.
